Check a DNS record

Find the current answer for a hostname and read the result.

DNS & resolvers · how-to · public

Checked against v1.241.1 on 2026-11-02 · Source reviewed

Before you start

Have the exact hostname, such as example.com or _dmarc.example.com. Omit https:// and page paths. This check reads DNS; it does not edit a zone.

Run the lookup

  1. Open DNS Lookup from Tools.
  2. Enter the hostname in Domain Name.
  3. Choose Record Type, for example A Record.
  4. Select Lookup DNS Records.
  5. Read the domain, lookup type, record count and resolver information above the table, then inspect the values and TTLs.

Understand the answer

Multiple A or AAAA values can be intentional. Compare the full returned set with your expected configuration. An absent AAAA answer does not establish that an A record is absent. TTL is a caching lifetime in seconds, not website load time.

Filter and preserve evidence

Use Filter displayed records to narrow the displayed result. Clear filter restores it. Copy the summary or results for a handoff. A Permalink runs a new lookup; use Share when you need a saved observation.

No answer or timeout

Confirm the hostname and requested type. A timeout is incomplete evidence. If different people see different answers, compare resolvers with DNS Propagation and record the observation time.

Verification scope: Current form labels, registry and source reviewed; live provider, mailbox, saved-work lifecycle and host acceptance remain separate.
